Minorities Must be Given Attention and Protected in Bangladesh
January 12, 2008 – 3:24 amOne of the most disgusting things I see is the abuse of the minorities of Bangladesh. The Bangladeshis who are Hindu, Bhuddists, and even the Urdu-Speaking Biharis are suffering constantly.
Help the Hindu Bangladeshis
The Hindus suffer the most from Islamic right wing fanatics who want to implement Islamic laws in Bangladesh with violence. According to Islamic law forcing Islam onto someone is haraam; therefore, what these fanatics are doing goes against what they are in favor for, a state that follows Islamic laws. A lot of Bengalis who don’t want to forgive the Pakistanis for their atrocities scream about the 3 million Bengalis who got killed but they refuse to understand the history behind it. About 80%-90% of all the Bengalis who were killed by the Pakistanis in 1971 were “Hindus,” while the rest were Muslims and others. Pakistani Army wanted to cleanse Bangladesh of her Hindu inhabitants so they massacred the Hindus who didn’t leave to India. The Bangladeshi Hindus should have equal protection and respect; they just want to go on with their lives and live in peace next to their fellow Muslim Bangladeshis. The religious people need to educate themselves and be taught that Muhammad (PBUH) lived peacefully with polytheists and protected them in Yathrib (modern day Medina).

| A Narrow Path in a Bihari Camp |
It’s been over 36 years and enough is enough, to reject these people of their basic human rights. These “stranded Pakistanis” live in one of the worst conditions in Bangladesh. They live in 64 camps and they get small ration of food and water, mostly provided by the United Nations and supported by the Bangladeshi government. The new born Biharis who were born after December 16, 1971 should be given automatic citizenship. The elder Biharis were the traitors and they committed the crimes but the new generation of Biharis should not suffer for the crimes their ancestors committed. The Pakistani government refuses to adopt them in Pakistan so Bangladesh has to take care of them. We should improve the lives of these people so they’ll know that it was Bangladesh who gave them something to live for and not Pakistan. The elder Biharis, even to this day, hope to settle in their beloved Pakistan despite the news they were told of Pakistan’s rejection of Bihairs. However, the younger generation just want to integrate in Bangladeshi society but they can’t because they have no citizenship. These people have no identity from any country. It sickens me that as Bangladeshi Muslims we let our fellow Muslim brethren suffer like this for crimes committed over 36 years ago; and the younger generation don’t even know anything else besides being Bangladeshis. Allah (SWT) demands us to forgive our fellow Muslim brethren but it seems that we still have anger from 1971. As Bangladeshis let’s not follow the Pakistani government and deprive the helpless, let’s help these helpless Biharis from suffering. We should give Bangladeshi citizenship to the Biharis who want citizenship and want to prosper in Bangladesh.
Be Fair to the Buddhists
The Buddhists, people of the Chakma tribe, are being forced off of their land every year. The Bangladeshi authorities are pushing them towards Burma (modern day Myanmar). These people were in the Bengal long before the Bengalis moved in. They do not cause any harm to the Bengalis and they have learned Bangla by their own will so they can do business in the Bangladeshi society. Like the reservation lands for Native Americans, the Chakmas should get some land to practice their culture, their faith, their traditional way of life.
We are proud Bangladeshis, let’s show the world how fair and moral we are, the true good-hearted Bengalis. “Bangladesh Zindabad!”
