Bangladesh Singers Singing Hindi/Urdu Songs?

February 29, 2008 – 1:42 am

I am astonished to see how many Bengali singers there are in Indian Idol and Sa Re Ga Ma. No doubt Bengalis are great singers and musicians who have resonated their talents to others places. One of these gifted singers is Runa Laila, a Karachi born Bengali who was one of the greatest Bengali/Urdu singers in all of Pakistan prior to 1971; she currently resides in Bangladesh and currently she’s one of the country’s top singers. Plus Alamgir, the Bengali-Pakistani singer, who sang the song “Tum Hi Sai Aai Mujahido,” for Pakistan, listen to the song below.

If Bangladeshi singers sing Hindi/Urdu songs then their popularity would come about in mainstream India and Pakistan.

Why not?
Bengalis are dominating Bollywood with their music, and Bengali singers like Shaan, Kumar Sanu, and Bappi Lahiri are great Hindustani singers. There are some extreme right wing music fanatics who would say no to Bangladeshi singers making Hindi albums just because Bangladeshis are Bengali and they should only sing Bengali songs, which is very idiotic. If Bangladeshi singers sing Hindi/Urdu songs then their popularity would come about in mainstream India and Pakistan. Some Bengali conservatives would say “what about Bangla,” well Bangla will always be our language since we kept it alive but to actually capture more Desi audiences Bangladeshi singers should try making Hindi/Urdu albums next to their Bangla albums. Bangladeshi singers will always sing in Bangla for local audiences, but to get more audiences all throu8ghout India and Pakistan they should try singing in Hindi/Urdu.

Bangladeshis, in general, love music no matter what language the songs are in so, it shouldn’t be a problem getting popularity with Hindi/Urdu albums in Bangladesh.

The following video is a small clip of two Indian Idol contestants performing in Bangladesh. Both of them speak Bengali as they are from the greater Bengal. The Nepali descent, West Bengali born Prashant Tamang was the winner of Indian Idol and Amit Pal, from Meghlaya, was the runner up. Along with their Hindi songs they sang Bangla songs.

  5. Yes there is too many connections with Pakistan from Bangladesh because it was mainly the Mohajirs and the East Bengali Muslims who built Pakistan.
