Are Desis Racists?
November 10, 2007 – 10:36 pmAre desis racists? A maybe would be a nice answer, but it leads to a YES. Desis, in my opinion, are one of the most racists group of people I have ever met.
How are they racists?
Desis, in general, judge people based on where there are from. One of the biggest people they attack are South Indians. I’ve met desis from different regions, such as Pakistanis, Gujuratis, Punjabis, and other middle and norther Desis, and they turn away from South Indians as they are not part of the Desi community.
Skin Color
For those who don’t know, skin color is a big factor when judging someone in the Desi community. We see that in the million dollar Bollywood movie industry; majority of the actors and especially the actresses in Bollywood films are fair skin people.
Even when in comes to marriage, Desi parents want the fairest girl for their son. Knowing that fact, I feel bad for the girls who are not so fair skin. Light skin is respect in the Desi world and I think it’s kind of pathetic and it only causes more hostility with this unfairness treatment.
I remember once I went to a Desi store to buy a music (I know, what was a thinking, mp3s are all over the web) and after talking to the person behind the counter, he gave me a discount just by looking at me. As a Desi, I know for a fact that he wouldn’t do the same for any Desi who has dark skin. And I also know he would treat me better than any darker skin person.
